Description from the publisher:

Rosabel McGuiness, orphaned Werewolf, has finally decided to leave the Werelion Pride she’s been living with for the last eighteen years. She’s been challenged to one duel too many. It’s time to find a pack to call home.

Theodore Wilson, Alpha of the Mount Roxby Pack, has never cared about finding his Mate. He swore off women when his Wife, a human who knew nothing about what he was, cheated on him. But now a new wolf has walked into town, and stirred up feelings he never imagined he would feel.

Mount Roxby has a plethora of supernatural beings, unbeknownst to the humans that live there. After a series of mysterious disappearances, and fatal attacks on both Werewolves and Vampires alike, Rosabel decides something needs to be done. But can she persuade the Pack Alpha and Vampire King, to put old prejudices behind them long enough to work together, and solve these attacks? Or will one bite too many cause a war?

This is the first book in the Mount Roxby series.  They do need to be read in order.

Rosabel was raised by her aunt and uncle, the only werewolf within a pride of were-lions.  Her aunt is human because the were-gene had skipped her.  As soon as she comes of age, the challenges begin…weekly attempts by the lions to kill the wolf.  Luckily, her uncle had trained and prepared her for this foreseeable situation and the Alpha’s son was willing to make challenges to protect her.  Finally, she decides to leave the pride lands and find a pack where she may be accepted.  Newly arrived in Mount Roxby, she lucks into a job at the local bar for supernaturals and an immediate friendship with the witch who owns it.  When the Alpha of the local pack meets her is surprised to find his mate and quick to realize that she was never taught to recognize the signs of a mate.  She has also caught the eye of the King of the Vampires.  Now she has to convince the Alpha and the King to work together against something strong enough to attack werewolves and kill vampires.  Can they set aside their jealousies long enough to locate and stop their mutual enemy?

The good:  Rosabel is strong… Alpha-strong.  The story was well-planned with plenty of intrigue, action, and unique abilities and situations.

The bad:  Unfortunately, neither of her Alphas (wolf or lion) appear to be alpha when she is present.  The Vampire King, Dominick, is aggressive and domineering.  Jared, the son of the werelion pride’s Alpha, is a bully.  None of them are called on their bull-spit.  There were also a few unrealistic plot holes (just how many lions were in that pride that it could still function after losing a member every week?).  I also think that some parts that needed more inspection were glossed over and trivial action more emphasized than was needed.

My conclusion:  This was the first book I have read from Ms. Jennison.  I hope it’s not my last!  Even with the writing troubles, I loved this story of werewolves and vampires.  I loved the premise of a werewolf raised among the werelions.  The author has great potential with well-developed scenes and plot.  I think she needs to work on her character development and timeline.  She needs to invest in an editor and take the time to grow into her craft.  I look forward to seeing her become the great writer I believe she will be.
