Just before her junior year in high
school, Nicki, her sister, and her mother were in a horrific accident that left
her scarred, her mother emotionally damaged, and her sister dead. Scarred emotionally and physically, Nicki
crushes on Adam, the British student whose locker is next to hers. Their relationship moves from friendship to
the intense romance of first love.
In 2004, I lost a child to a DUI
driver, so, for me, there was some incredible emotional moments in reading
about the accident that took Lauren away from her family.
This story is full of the angst of teenage
love and coming-of-age in a small town in Texas. I cried so many times in this story. Some tears were for the family that had lost
a child, some for the loss of love, and some were happy tears of joy and
hope. I believe Ms. Whitney has captured
the intense emotions of these teens and their friends as they travel their
paths through high school and beyond. Adam’s
sister, Sylvia, is an absolute hoot and hope we find out more about her in
future books in this series.
I hope to be reviewing book two soon
and I will be watching for book three as well.
