~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is the first in a two part series of books.  It would stand alone, but I don’t think you’ll want to miss part two.  If you are going to read both, they do need to be read in order.
Aubrey has always wanted to be a writer.  She reads mostly romance novels and has the heart of a romantic, so of course this is her chosen genre, but she has no experience of her own.  Intent on gaining experience, she contacts her best friend for advice.  After a failed attempt at speed-dating, Aubrey meets Alex.  Alex is gorgeous, but with a sordid reputation as a player.  The girls decide that he would be perfect to play the role as muse for Aubrey and she will just have to guard her heart against the plays he will undoubtedly try on her.  Unexpectedly, they fall for each other.  Then, when a miscommunication leads to tragedy, Aubrey is left with a broken heart.  No longer concerned with her book, Aubrey must decide if she will ever trust another man.
I was contacted by one of my favorite authors and asked to give this two book series a read and review.  Like I said, favorite author, so of course I said yes and I happened to have the openings in my schedule immediately, so I started reading last night.  The first couple of pages, I thought to myself, “Oh Lord, she sounds like Sandy at the end of Grease.”  Then I turned the page and Aubrey thought to herself, “I felt like Sandy in the movie Grease, calling Frenchy for a makeover.  I guess in a way I was.”  That was the beginning of my love affair with a brand new author.  This is Ms. Schwehm’s debut novel and all I can say is please, please keep writing!  I am, right now, thanking the good Lord that I already have the second book and will be starting it as soon as I finish writing up this post.
Some parts were a little predictable, but it’s a romance novel, I expect that to some extent.  What I didn’t expect was how genuine the characters felt to me.  I would love to be friends with people like Aubrey, Julie, Mark, Alex, and Brett.  This book made me laugh.  Not just a little giggle, I mean belly laughs that stopped the reading for a moment. I highlighted the whole scene when Julie calls Alex, “dude.”   It also had me crying.  Crying so hard I couldn’t see the page, but I couldn’t stop reading because I needed to get past the pain to the good that I hoped would be on the other side.  Ms. Schwehm delivers and delivers in a big way.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves love.  This is romance all of the way through.  Now, I need to go read the second book in this series.  Talk to you again soon!
The series:
  1. Unexpected Chance
  2. My Chance
