CHARMING by Elliott James

Title:  CHARMING
Series:  Pax Arcana #1
Author:  Elliott James
Publisher:  Orbit Books / Hachette Book Group
Category:  Sci Fi & Fantasy
Received from:  Orbit Books via netgalley.com

Description:
John Charming isn't your average Prince...

He comes from a line of Charmings -- an illustrious family of dragon slayers, witch-finders and killers dating back to before the fall of Rome. Trained by a modern day version of the Knights Templar, monster hunters who have updated their methods from chainmail and crossbows to Kevlar and shotguns, he was one of the best.  That is-- until he became the abomination the Knights were sworn to hunt.

That was a lifetime ago.  Now, he tends bar under an assumed name in rural Virginia and leads a peaceful, quiet life.  One that shouldn't change just because a vampire and a blonde walked into his bar... Right?

Mr. James packed a lot of mythology into a tight bit and kept it tight.  He did an exceptional job of providing the backgrounds without overwhelming or insulting the intelligence of the reader.  There is sarcasm, suspense, and fantasy all built around a building love story.

It was fun diving into the parallel world developed in this book. The fight scenes were well developed and without too much poetic license. I too am a martial artist, but I find reading fight scenes that were that detailed a bit much.  The love story is also believable and the dawning realization of their love is reasonable.  You will root for John Charming, the guy stealing the girl, because her current boyfriend is such an ass-hat.
I really enjoyed reading this story.  I will be picking up the short-stories and watching for more from Mr. Elliott James.
